Where We Gather: Marketplaces and Landscapes
There is something wonderfully universal about a marketplace. Whether tucked into a quiet village square or bustling along the streets of a distant city, markets are places where life unfolds. They are filled with colour, movement, conversation and the simple pleasures of everyday human connection.
For celebrated Canadian artist Valerie Kent, these gathering places have long been a source of fascination and inspiration. Through her vibrant Market Series, Kent invites us to experience the energy and spirit of marketplaces around the world, capturing not only the sights and colours, but also the humanity that brings these spaces to life.
Her paintings celebrate the beauty of ordinary moments: people moving through crowded streets, vendors surrounded by their wares, and the countless small interactions that make a marketplace so much more than a place of commerce. They are places of community, culture and shared experience.
Working with expressive colour, texture and a lively painterly style, Kent brings a wonderful sense of vitality to her compositions. Her marketplaces are rich with detail and atmosphere, inviting viewers to linger, explore and imagine themselves within the scene.
At the heart of this work is a simple but powerful observation: while our cultures, traditions and surroundings may differ, the desire to gather, connect and belong is something we all share.
Kent's fascination with these connections has inspired a body of work that has attracted international attention, including in Korea, Japan and the Netherlands. Her paintings reflect a lifelong curiosity about the world and a genuine appreciation for the people and places she encounters.
